Scenting Plushies Made Easy: 3 DIY Methods

Scenting plushies has become a hot topic in the world of stuffed animals.

It's a relatively new trend, but one that's quickly gaining traction.

And why not? A plushie that not only looks and feels good but also smells fantastic is a triple threat!

Over time, even the most cherished plushies can start to lose their fresh scent.

But what if you could make them smell nice and fresh all over again? Better yet, what if you could choose the scent yourself?

The Magic Behind Scented Plushies

Stuffed animals can be made to smell good using a few methods.

These include inserting scent chips into the plushie, using scent beads that have been soaked in fragrance oil, or directly adding the fragrance oil to the stuffing.

These DIY methods can turn an ordinary plushie into a scented delight, enhancing the cuddling experience.

1. Scent Chips: The Quick and Easy Method

One of the most common ways to add a delightful aroma to stuffed animals is through the use of scent chips.

These are small plastic chips infused with various fragrances.

They're dry to the touch and large enough that they won't pose a choking hazard for kids, and they generally last around 6 months.

However, scent chips do have their downsides.

For one, they remain as a hard disk inside your plush even after the scent is gone.

This might not be ideal for a snuggly plush. Also, some users have reported that certain brands of scent chips can have a more artificial or chemical-like smell.

Despite these drawbacks, scent chips are a popular choice due to their ease of use.

You simply place them inside your plush, and voila! Your plushie is now scented.

Pro Tip: When using scent chips, make sure to place them in the middle of the stuffing. This allows the scent to permeate throughout the plushie, giving it a consistent and lasting fragrance.

2. Scent Beads: A More Sophisticated Approach

If you're looking for a more refined method on how to scent plushies, scent beads, also known as aroma beads, might be the answer.

These are my personal favorites, and they can absorb up to 30% of their weight in oil without expanding or shrinking, and they end up dry to the touch.

To use scent beads, you mix them with the fragrance oil of your choice and let them absorb the scent.

For the last few years, I've been mixing 1oz of fragrance oil per 1 cup of aroma beads in a glass mason jar and it's worked great!

Anyway after that, shake until all the beads are thoroughly coated and place them in a warm place.

Shake them up every now and then to make sure the beads are coated evenly and all the oil isn’t settled at the bottom.

After they're fully dry, you can place them inside your plushie.

This method is great because it allows for a more even distribution of the scent, and the beads are small enough that they won't affect the plushie's softness.

Plus, the scent from these beads can last anywhere from 1 month to 1 year, depending on the scent and the environment the plush is in.

Now that's what we call long-lasting freshness!

3. Directly Scenting the Stuffing: For the DIY Enthusiast

If you're a DIY enthusiast wondering how to make scented plushies, you might want to consider directly scenting the stuffing.

This method involves mixing the stuffing with scented oils.

However, it does require a bit of caution as the oil could potentially stain the plushie.

Despite this, directly scenting the stuffing can be a fun and hands-on way to personalize your plushies.

One method that sounds promising is to place a big handful of stuffing in a bag with scented oil and let it sit for a while.

Then, use the handful of stuffing inside the plush with regular stuffing.

This way, the scent is integrated directly into the plushie, giving it a strong and lasting fragrance.

Caution: When using this method, it's best to test a small amount of the oil on a piece of the stuffing first to make sure it doesn't stain.

Cleaning and Maintaining Your Scented Plushies

Keeping your scented plushie clean without washing away the scent might seem tricky, but don't worry, we've got you covered!

For a detailed guide on how to clean your plushies, check out our blog post on plushie care. But here's a quick rundown:

  1. Spot Cleaning: Use a damp cloth and mild soap to gently clean any dirty spots. Avoid the area where the scent is concentrated.

  2. Refreshing the Scent: Over time, the scent may start to fade. You can refresh it by adding more scent beads or chips, or by applying a few drops of essential oil to the stuffing.

Safety Considerations

Safety is always our top priority here at Wakaii.

Here are some important safety considerations when dealing with scented plushies:

  1. Choking Hazard: Ensure that the scent chips or beads are securely enclosed within the plushie to prevent them from becoming a choking hazard.

  2. Allergies: Some people might be allergic to certain scents or the ingredients used in scent chips or beads. Always check the ingredients and do a patch test if necessary.

  3. Toxicity: Ensure that the scents used are non-toxic and safe for children. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and warnings.
